Naturally, the proof clearly shows the climate is changing, mostly due to man-made gases. And the effects are probably going to be terrible. But exaggerating them and being caught out isn’t the way to gain public understanding or trust. As a science correspondent I couldn’t, with a clear conscience, report the liquefying of the Greenland and West Antarctic ice caps will drown the majority of Florida ( as Al Gore does in An Inconvenient Truth ) without indicating that this isn’t certain to occur for thousands of years.
the results of this fairness is that a large amount of sceptics trust the Potholer54 channel, and appreciate they are not being talked down to, or badgered or lectured. I don’t call them climate “deniers”, which presupposes there’s some certain truth they’re rejecting. They learn climate science the same way many school-kids find out about sex from other youngsters.
The sole difference in the Net age is that the playground got larger.
Without any question they unsceptically believe dubious sources like Fox Reports , the Daily Express and newbie blogs.
A parade of scientists ( never mind if they have degrees in microbiology or metallurgy ) tell them that sea cycles are reponsible for global temperature increases, or that there’s no warming at all, or that whether or not there’s there’s nothing to stress about. Spend just one or two days in this peculiar world of misinformation and it’s tough to know how the fans couldn’t come to the opinion that anthropogenic global warming is a hoax. And if it’s a hoax, the subsequent plain conclusion is that climate scientists must be either dumb or in it for the money. Deconstructing all this false guff, one parable at a time, means checking it back to its source, finding the errors, and then pitting it against correct research analysis. No need for condescention, insult, or appeals to emotion.
Environmental activists who’ve subscribed to the channel also started to change their minds about global warming, except for another reason. They learned that some principles of the environmental movement aren’t set up on solid science. And they told me the series had armed them with the info they wished to rebut arguments from sceptic pals and relations. Science is science as the knowledge we aquire comes from experimentation and observation, not speculation, belief and hearsay. Unfortunately, most papers dispensed with a dedicated science hack years back.
Once folks understand this, the job of explaining real science is straightforward.
